A renowned way of catching fish such as trout and salmon (but also used to catch other fish such as pike, bass, grayling and carp, as well as marine species such as tarpon, bonefish and striped bass), fly fishing techniques can be used in both freshwater and saltwater.

When fly fishing, fish are caught using artificial flies that are cast with fly fishing rods, fly reels and fly lines. The fly line is must be heavy enough to cast the fly to the targetted area. Fly fishing flies are comprised of many different varieties, depending on the fish, and local conditions.

Fly fishing is all about casting line, rather than the lure itself. Essential pieces of kit include:

Fly Fishing Rods

Rods come in a wide variety. Different lengths, materials and weights are used to cast (present) the flies to the species of fish, as well as landing the fish once it has taken the bait.

Fly Reels

There are many types of fly reel. They are usually large arbour reels and of the centrepin variety. In fly fishing, the reel has always been little more than a line storage device, with the fly angler pulling the line off the reel with one hand and casting with the other. More advanced reels are available so fish can be caught in more demanding conditions.

Fly Lines

Fly Lines are specialised that supply the weight required to cast a lightweight fly with the fly fishing rod.

Fishing Clothing

It's essential to stay warm and dry, but the key items for any angler's collection of fly fishing tackle includes fishing clothing such as fishing waders, wading boots and wading vests.

Fly Boxes

Designed to store flies in a well organised way, and are available in a wide variety of sizes.
